The result of the 2017 Toronto Emerging Composer Award was Bekah Simms’ dectet Granitic. I had the pleasure of conducting the premiere of this work, presented by the Caution Tape Sound Collective, in March 2018, and of recording it shortly thereafter. The work was one of two tracks that I conducted for Simms’ debut album, impurity chains, released on the Centrediscs label later in 2018 (we presented an encore performance of Granitic at the album launch party in September).
Just last week, Bekah and the Granitic team were surprised to learn that the piece had been nominated for a Juno Award for Classical Composition of the Year! A well-deserved recognition for Bekah Simms and an honour for the performers to have been a part of the project. The results will be announced March 16, 2019.
